The kind of place that man could never create or recreate. They are the Natural Wonders of the World. Today, we are in such a place. At 4,200 meters (13,800 ft) elevation, we are standing on the lookout point across the valley from Aconcagua. Reaching 6,960 meters (22,837 ft.) high, Aconcagua is the tallest mountain in the Western Hemisphere and the second tallest mountain on the infamous Seven Summits list. (more…)

Staring into the fire, hypnotized by the dancing flames, the thought occurs to me that the wine has gone to my head, and I smile. I look up at the stars of the southern sky for the first time in my life and I feel a sense of profound significance flooding my mind in this moment. I look to my right and see Maria sitting next me, lost in the experience of this moment. I look to my left and see Diego, our host for the evening, sitting on the log next to me in his traditional gaucho attire, drinking wine from a 2 liter coca cola bottle that has been cut in half, holding his 5 stringed guitar. Our Grand Adventure Begins

After a long, bumpy road that left us with many surprises and challenges, we are serenely relieved, ever grateful, and beyond thrilled to embark on the first leg of our grand adventure. Initial plans were for us to leave our home behind in March 2014, but just two months before our date of departure, life had other plans.

We had planned. We had prepped. We had dreamed of this trip for more than a year, while patiently waiting and doing the ten thousands small things necessary to undertake such a journey. We had been vaccinated. We had written our letters of resignation. We had purchased our backpacks and equipment.
